TOC for Managing Production

TOC for Managing Production is both a stand-alone program and a core component of TOC for Workflow Management. As a stand-alone program, it includes Constraint-Based Decision Making, and TOC for Workflow Management – Overview.

2 days - 10 hours

This program investigates and demonstrates the cause of the typical problems of production:

  • Long, and often unreliable lead times

  • Delayed deliveries

  • Excessive work-in-process

  • Higher than budgeted costs, etc.

The solution is derived using simulations and cause-and-effect logic.  Scheduling, synchronization, and control methods are taught, applied, and discussed.  The characteristics of basic production workflows are covered, as well as the process of developing workflow maps.

Benefits
Attendees will learn how to:

  • Use the Five Focusing Steps and Drum-Buffer-Rope (DBR) to better manage any production-managed workflow, where work is viewed and managed in the context of processing rates and queue times, regardless of whether the workflow is that of production, manufacturing, repair, or logistics

  • More effectively identify queuing variability and reposition work level safety to the order level where it will better protect delivery performance

  • Synchronize workflow across multiple products with level loads on shared resources and how to gate the start of new production work

  • Use properly positioned and sized time buffers to manage and contain the effects of variability (i.e., setup times, process times, scrap, yield, rework, non-instant availability of resources (queuing), etc.)

  • Use work order updates of work completed to make visible time buffer consumption for proper workflow prioritization and proactive planning or corrective actions

  • Use “Road Runner” resource behaviors to make more effective use of resources and to increase speed of workflow

  • Use VATI Flow Characteristics to more easily identify key flow control points in any workflow

  • Identify which types of Planning, Scheduling, and Control actions will positively or negatively affect the performance outcomes of production-managed workflows

Who Should Attend

  • Senior-level leaders who want to have an efficient, effective, and competitively positioned production-based workflow management system

  • Senior-level leaders who are inspired to innovate

  • Senior-level leaders at growth companies who are challenged to scale

  • Seasoned and influential executives who will use this opportunity to make an even greater difference in their careers and their organizations’ future

Format
The class is presented online in a live, virtual Zoom classroom, with supplemental prerecorded modules. To accommodate our global customers, programs are available in three time zones: EDT/EST (North America), CET/CEST (Europe), and SGT (Asia Pacific).

Class Times
10am to 4:30pm EDT/EST – Short breaks and lunch are built into each day.

Required Viewing
Module 1: Constraint-Based Decision Making
(this MUST be viewed prior to Day 1)

  • Part One: Product Decisions Based on Business Profitability vs Product Profitability (24 minutes)

  • Part Two: Capacity Decisions Based on Workflow Management vs Resource Utilization (30 minutes)

  • Part Three: Improvement Decisions Based on Throughput vs Cost Savings (16 minutes)

Required Reading
The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement by Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox

Additional Requirements
